What could have caused the sudden rise in air pollution in the New York City/Hoboken area in the wee hours of July 5? Pictured: Manhattan, as seen from Hoboken on July 4. (Caren Lissner/Patch) NORTH JERSEY, NJ — The air quality in parts of North Jersey dropped to a level on Wednesday that was not seen since the Canadian wildfire pollution of a month ago — and a new alert has been issued for Thursday, starting at 11 a.m. Experts said that when levels crept into the "unhealthy" zone Wednesday morning, the culprit was July 4 fireworks, not Canadian fires.
