Jersey City and Hoboken have discussed increasing collaboration — and possibly even merging — their fire departments, a move that remains rare in New Jersey where department independence and labor unions reign. An anticipated influx of new residents in southern Hoboken and the resulting demand for emergency services prompted the conversations, Hoboken Public Safety Director Ken Ferrante said. Jersey City has since sent paperwork to the state capital to explore the idea of increasing mutual aid between the cities, said Jersey City spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione.
